| On
15 June 1758 the abbot of Lérins donated a plot of land on
the Marine, on the site of the Hotel Splendid, for the building
of a chapel. The chapel was never finished, and work ceased in 1764.
The building was sold in 1771 to J-F Bournin, a trader from Grasse,
who turned it into a soap factory. But he went bankrupt and sold
it to a Mr Gazielle who used it as an oil and corn store, and then
as an inn. Opposite the inn was the sea and an expanse of dunes.
Here the fishermen spread out their nets to dry and pulled up their
boats for shelter during bad weather. |
